Comparison Madonna And Child Angels Essay Example For Students

Comparison: Madonna And Child Angels Essay The painting called Madonna and Child with Saint Francis and Dominic and Angels by Giulio Cesare Procaccini is one of many paintings labeled masterpiece. This painting contains brilliant brushwork and messages that are indirect. This painting was done in Milan Italy any where from 1574-1625. It is 101 1/8 x 56 3/8 in. 256.9 x 143.2 cm and painted on canvas with oil. In the picture all the faces are looking at the child that is held by Mary. Saint Francis is dressed in a long cloak with a hood in one hand he hold a wooden cross and in the other hand an apple that he giving to the virgin mother. Saint Dominic is on the other side of Mary who is elevated above everyone else. Saint Dominic seems to be falling backward in awe of Mary. There are angels all around with roses in a vase. One angel is playing the guitar the others are just hanging around Mary. The Christ child is on Marys lap he looks straight out. Giulio Cesare Procaccini shows the figures as full and having realistic mass. He gives the illusion of layering that one person is in front of the other. The artist leaves no space between figures; every spot is filled with a body or object. There is an emphasis on the Christ child his eyes look directly at you through this portrait. There is a sense of rhythm that everyone in the painting is just flows around Mary. There is balance in figures and the proportion is exact. There seems to be a unity that everyone hovered around the virgin to watch her. The emphasis on the child gives a focus point to help tie up the picture together. The tight composition and the perfect brushstroke aids to make this painting perfect. In this portrait there is no sense of gravity Mary and the angels are in the air with nothing holding them down. Saint Francis and Saint Dominic are the only ones who are standing and the look realistic. Giulio Cesare Procaccinis narrative is trying to say that Saint Francis is man and is giving Mary an apple. That show that man is handing over himself and everything he has to Christianity. He is showing his love for Mary and giving all he has to her. Then Saint Dominic is falling backwards when he sees Mary he almost shows surprise when he sees her and falls back. I believe that this is showing that he is almost bowing down to her that he falls from her excellently. The flowers are a gift for the women that means she in praise worthy for she will rule everyone until her son is born. The angles appear that they are used to Mary and that they must follow her around a lot. They appear calm and seem to have great love for the virgin. Saint Dominic and Saint Francis do not appear that they are used to Mary and baby Christs presence. The artist is trying to say that everyone should hold great respect for Mary and Christ. That you should worship them and give all you have to them. Giving all you have to them that Saint Francis shows by giving Mary the apple shows that he trusts her and that Christ and Mary will lead him down the right path. The viewpoint that Giulio Cesare Procaccini takes is that Christianity is the only way to go and it is a religion you can put all of your trust into. At first when I had looked at the picture I thought it was unclear and I really did not like it. I looked like a mess of characters going their own way. But as I looked into the dark shadows and tried to put the pieces together and make sense of it I was able to tell that this portrait is giving me a clear message. This work of art by Giulio Cesare Procaccini tells me to put my faith in Christ and to follow only him. He is trying to say that happiness relies on Christ and only Christ. Giulio Cesare Procaccini puts a very strong message into this painting and it has affected me to think about my faith in God. It forces me to think about if I am being a good catholic and it also makes me think about if I really just in our Lord. If I could give everything I have to Christ just like how Saint Francis gives what he has to Mary the virgin mother. Saint Dominic shows that Christ is great and the Catholics should praise him. That also makes me refer to myself and if I am praying enough and do I attend church enough.

Analysis Of The Epilogue Of The Tempest Essays - Prospero

Analysis of the Epilogue of the Tempest Bringing it all together The Epilogue of the Tempest by William Shakespeare is an excellent -- if not the best -- example of Shakespeare's brilliance. In 20 lines Shakespeare is able to write an excellent ending to his play, while speaking through his characters about Shakespeare's own life and career. Even more amazingly, he seemlessly ties the two together. In the context of the story Prospero's monologue makes perfect sense. He has lost his magical power, so his "charms are o'erthrown, and what strength [Prospero] have's [his] own, which is most faint." He is now "confined" on the Island, for his other choice would be to go to Naples and reclaim his dukedom, but he doesn't want to do that because he has already "pardoned the deceiver" who took his position many years ago. Prospero then says something a little strange, but it makes sense in the context of the story, he ask us to "release [him] from [his] bands with the help of your good hands." In other words, clap so that the sails of the boats his friends are riding in will be safely returned and Prospero can be "relieved by prayer" of the audience. All of what Prospero has said is very nice cute, but the most interesting part of this monologue is what Shakespeare himself is saying. "Now that my charms are all o'erthrown, and what strength I have's mine own" means, now my plays are over, and it's no longer my characters speaking. The "Island" or stage Shakespeare is on is now "bare" and it is time for "you" the audience to release Shakespeare and his actors from this play with the "help of [y]our good hands." Shakespeare was not only being released for the performance of the play, he was being release from his career as a playwright. But there are more reasons to clap besides the obvious reason that the play is over, Shakespeare could not allow his final play to be bad, his project "was to please." He reiterates this point by saying "and my ending is despair unless I be relieved by prayer", or the clapping of the audience and it frees "all faults" and allows Shakespeare to indulge the clapping and joy of the audience. Finally, after we seperate the two different perspectives, we can step back and see how Shakespeare magically works them together. The first such pun is on the word "faint", in the third line. Prospero uses faint to describe his strength, but Shakespeare makes it a pun on the pun he is making! Let me explain, faint means light (amoung other things), which means light hearted, or fun. As if you thought this wasn't confusing enough already, you could put a pun on the pun on the pun! Again, let me explain, faint can also mean hard to see, like the pun on the pun! That might be pushing it a little, though. The thing about Shakespeare is anything is possible. Another, less obvious but more significant double meaning is on the word "please" on line 13. Prospero is literally saying his goal was to make the people on the Island happy, Shakespeare is saying his goal was to please his audience. Shakespeare was without a doubt is one of the greatest authors of all time, this Epilogue clearly sh ows us that. >>>>>this paper is not exactly polished, but there is A LOT of good interpretation, A quality, even at the college level

William Sturgeon, Inventor of the Electromagnet

William Sturgeon, Inventor of the Electromagnet An electromagnet is a device in which a magnetic field is produced by an electric current.   British electrical engineer William Sturgeon, a former soldier who began to dabble in the sciences at the age 37, invented the electromagnet in 1825. Sturgeon’s device came a mere five years after a Danish scientist discovered that electricity emitted magnetic waves. Sturgeon harnessed this idea and conclusively demonstrated that the stronger the electric current, the stronger the magnetic force.   Invention of the First Electromagnet The first electromagnet he built was a horseshoe-shaped piece of iron that was wrapped with a loosely wound coil of several turns. When a current was passed through the coil the electromagnet became magnetized, and when the current was stopped, the coil was de-magnetized. Sturgeon displayed its power by lifting nine pounds with a seven-ounce piece of iron wrapped with wires through which the current of a single cell battery was sent.   Sturgeon could regulate his electromagnet- that is, the magnetic field could be adjusted by adjusting the electrical current. This was the beginning of using electrical energy for making useful and controllable machines and laid the foundations for large-scale electronic communications.   Improvements on Sturgeons Invention Five years later an American inventor named Joseph Henry (1797 to 1878)  made a far more powerful version of the electromagnet. Henry demonstrated the potential of Sturgeons device for long distance communication by sending an electronic current over one mile of wire to activate an electromagnet which caused a bell to strike. Thus the electric telegraph was born.   Sturgeons Later Life After his breakthrough, William Sturgeon taught, lectured, wrote and continued experimenting. By 1832, he had built an electric motor and invented the commutator, an integral part of most modern electric motors, that allows the current to be reversed to help create torque. In 1836 he founded the journal â€Å"Annals of Electricity,† kicked off the Electrical Society of London, and invented a suspended coil galvanometer to detect electrical currents.   He moved to Manchester in 1840 to work at the Victoria Gallery of Practical Science. That project failed four years later, and from then on, he made his living lecturing and giving demonstrations. For a man who gave science so much, he apparently earned little in return. In poor health and with little money, he spent his last days in dire circumstances. He died on 4 December 1850 in Manchester.
